- The Heroic Fantasy, Sword, Sorcery
The heroic fantasy (epic fantasy) highlights one or more heroes who will manage to defeat enemies thanks to their physical, mental or magical abilities, while being in the middle of a conflict, war. (For example : Robert E. Howard’s Conan.) ;
- Light Fantasy
A comic, humorous and absurd subgenre. The goal is to amuse the reader and differ from the often serious universe of Fantasy. (For example : Terry Pratchett’s Discworld Annals.) ;
- Dark Fantasy
The “wonderful black” in French, brings a much darker atmosphere than in other categories of fantasy novels. The evil is much stronger here and it will frequently take over the good, with characters often quite ambiguous. (For examples : H.P. Lovecraft’s The Myth of CTHULHU; The Iron Throne by George R.R. Martin; The Witcher by Andrzej Sapkowski.) ;
- Romantic Fantasy
This is the subgenre that brings sweetness and poetry to this sometimes dark, dangerous universe etc. (For examples : Black Demons by Suzanne Wright; Holly Black’s The Cruel Prince.).
